Fortify: Radical Generosity, Strong Families, Vibrant Communities
With the housing crisis in the city, vulnerable families quickly find themselves in crisis. Ultimately, children from families in crisis have a higher chance of foster care involvement. Fortify, a new initiative, provides stable housing and relational support for vulnerable families, strengthening them long before they hit a breaking point.
Private developers and property owners donate apartment units for families for 12 months. Units are rented to vulnerable families for a greatly subsidized rate, stabilizing the family.Donate A Unit
Community volunteers wrap-around these families, providing much needed relational support as families transition from dependency on DHS’ Self-Sufficiency branch (formerly “Welfare”) to independence.Volunteer
At the conclusion of the program, families receive most of their rent money back in the form of a grant that covers post-secondary education, debt pay down, deposits for a new apartment, etc. This grant allows families to leave Fortify with a buffer that protects against falling back onto welfare.
