Respite providers provide breaks – babysitting and perhaps occasional overnights – for foster children living in another foster home. To become a respite provider you do not need to go through the state’s training needed to become a certified foster parent. Respite parents are not reimbursed through the state. Respite providers are finger-printed and background checked by the state.
We encourage foster parents to build their team of people who can do respite for them and to request the needed paperwork from their certifier. If you are interested in providing respite care, approach a foster family you know. If you don't know anyone foster families, Embrace Oregon can help connect you with foster families.
